Today might feel like any other Wednesday to you, but for me today is the Friday variety of Wednesday, and it’s also a day I’ve been counting down to. Tonight one of my dearest friends and her boyfriend arrive in San Francisco to spend the next six nights with us.
It’s not the first time we’ve hosted guests in our apartment, but it is Jorie and Mike’s first time at our place. I get excited every time friends come to stay, but since Jorie and I used to live together, it feels extra exciting that for one weekend only we’ll share a bathroom again like the good ol’ days.
In a one-bedroom apartment, a little prep can go a long way to making guests feel at home. Here’s how I’ve been preparing our place for our guests.
Prepping a One-Bedroom Apartment for Guests
I cleared a place in our extra closet for their luggage. When you don’t have a guest bedroom to offer guests, the least you can do is offer a place for their stuff. As I guest, I hate feeling like my stuff is in the way, so I welcome a dedicated and host-approved spot for my luggage.
I put fresh flowers in their bedroom (which is the living room). I love having fresh flowers in the house anytime, but I feel like they are a must when company is coming over. My spring blooms are working wonders on brightening up the space.
I washed our linens and cleared space in the bathroom for their things. After a long day of city walking and exploring, I need a shower, followed with a layer of my nice face lotion and a cozy spot on the couch. I have fresh sheets and towels and made sure we had full bottles of body wash and lotion for our guests. And, I don’t mean to brag, but our air mattress has four stars on Amazon.
I stocked my pantry with snacks and my fridge with beverages. You know that book about love languages? I’m pretty sure my love language is providing and receiving food. It’s one of my favorite ways to welcome guests. This one was really easy since Jorie and I have traveled and lived together and since we like all the same snacks. Chocolate covered pretzels, hummus and pita chips, and fruit. Done. I’m baking a lemon loaf tonight too and leaving it out in the kitchen, so, should our guests wake hungry and with the sun anytime this week, they’ll have something accessible to snack on.
I printed our Alcatraz tickets and put them in a spot where I’ll remember them. Tomorrow we’re touring Alcatraz. It’ll only be my second time doing it, and the ferry ride over there is such a treat on its own. Having the tickets in sight has a been a pleasant reminder that guests are coming and my Thursday plans are much more exciting than they usually are.
Now there’s nothing left to do but get through this work day and greet them at the airport. I can’t wait! I’ll be back next week with stories our adventures, including the trip we’re taking to Yosemite this weekend.
What’s your favorite thing to do for house guests? Maybe I’ll steal your idea…
